Teacher as an Explicit Reading model

Definition

One very important way in which teachers motivate students to read is through being an explicit reading model.

  • Teachers who value reading communicate that reading is meaningful and enjoyable.

  • Teachers become explicit reading models when they share their personal reading experiences with students. There is usually something worth sharing in most books and materials we read e.g. an exciting paragraph, an interesting description of a character, etc.

Reminder

When teachers demonstrate to students that reading would broaden their understanding of the world, provide intellectual and personal enjoyment, enhance vocabulary development, and contribute to more effective speaking and writing, they position themselves as authentic readers which positively shapes learner perception of reading.
