This course offers an in-depth scientific exploration of plant-derived secondary metabolites, examining their structural diversity, pharmacokinetic profiles and specific molecular targets. The programme examines the modulation of cellular responses, notably the activation of antioxidant defences via the EpRE (or ARE) sequence, the attenuation of the inflammatory cascade mediated by the NF-kappaB complex, and epigenetic regulation. These fundamental mechanisms shed light on clinical applications for metabolic, cardiovascular, oncological and neurodegenerative conditions, whilst incorporating the assessment of toxicity, drug interactions and the regulatory framework for nutraceuticals.
The main objectives of the course are to explain the in vivo biological fate of these molecules, to characterise their cellular interactions and to understand the risk-benefit balance in clinical practice. Upon completion of this course, the learner will have developed key skills: they will be able to assess the preventive or curative potential of a plant-based matrix based on its biochemical composition, to anticipate the risks of pharmacological interactions linked to the inhibition of cytochromes P450, and to devise personalised therapeutic nutrition management strategies tailored to individual metabolotypes.
