The Academic Word List is a compilation of 570 words that are frequently encountered in academic texts, making them broadly applicable to academic writing, reading and listening across all fields.
These words are considered to be general academic vocabulary and can be extremely beneficial to students.
Averil Coxhead created the list by examining numerous academic texts from various subjects to identify common words.
She grouped the 570 words into 10 sub-lists based on their frequency, with sub-list 1 containing the most common words and sub-list 10 containing the least common.
Each sub-list comprises either 60 or 30 words. While these words are prevalent in academic literature, they are not commonly used in everyday communication, which can make them challenging to learn.
However, it is crucial for students to acquire these words, as they are necessary for comprehending and producing academic work at the university level.
Becoming proficient in these words can simplify studying and lead to greater academic success.
