  • Welcome to the Reading Comprehension course

    Overview 

    In addition to listening skill, reading is deemed a crucial receptive skill that needs to be mastered to attain proficiency in the productive skills. This course intends to develop English learners' reading skills when dealing with a variety of texts. These texts include different topics and themes that can be encountered both in academic and general contexts. Given the onerous nature of reading comprehension, learners will be trained to cope successfully with it through various types of activities and tasks that are meant to enable the improvement of comprehension of several texts. 


    Objectives 

    Relying on the IELTS approach, the course teaches a wide range of reading skills including the students’ ability to follow an argument, recognize a writer’s opinion, attitude or purpose. It looks at how well a student is able to read and understand main ideas, details and implied meanings. Texts are taken from current books, journals, magazines and newspapers. As for the tasks or questions, they range from multiple choice to identifying information or a writer’s view, matching headings, features and sentence endings, as well as summary, table and flow-chart completions.

  • Lecture one

    The lesson will start by dealing with the difficult words in the preparation task. Then the students will read the text silently for 15 minutes prior to reading it aloud. Students will be asked some general questions about the topic of the text which is Mindfulness, after which they will do the first activity, which is a TRUE/False activity. The second activity is a reflection task, wherein students will be given statements and scenarios to consolidate their comprehension of what being mindful is and what not being mindful is.

    In the last task which is production-related, students will be required to provide their own definition of Mindfulness and analyze their own daily situations wherein they are usually unmindful to find solutions to overcome this problem. 

  • Lecture two

    This lesson will begin by the preparation task wherein students will have the opportunity to become familiar with the difficult words in the text to be able to attain general comprehension while reading. Students will then be asked to read the text silently for 15 minutes to be able to read it aloud afterwards. Following the aloud reading students will be required to answer some general comprehension questions about the topic of the text which is mental health. Then, they will do the first True/False activity, followed by a fill-in the gap activity and lastly a reflection task, wherein they will have to define concepts and suggest how we can foster good mental health in the educational settings for both teachers and students.   

  • Lecture Three

    This lesson will begin with the preparation task, to aid students in their comprehension. Students will then read the text silently for 20 minutes, after which they will be asked to read it aloud. Prior to starting the activities, a short discussion on the topic of humour will be held, in which students will be asked to define humour, state the different purposes of humour and the motives behind it. Following the discussion, these activities will be done:  a True/False/Not Given activity, a fill-in the gap activity and a sentence completion activity, respectively. 

  • Lecture Four

    In order to attain good comprehension of the text, students start the lesson with the vocabulary task, wherein the presumably unknown words were selected from the text to be learned in this task. Students will then read the text silently for 15 minutes to be able to read it aloud afterwards. Following the aloud reading, students will discuss the topic : Cure-all-Pills, in which they will be required to give their opinions about alternative medicine and natural ingredients to heal diseases. The related activities will then be done, starting by a True/False/ Not given task, followed by a multiple-choice task and lastly a fill-in the gap task.
