    • Aim of the Module

      • The Comprehension and Written Expression Module (CWE)  introduces first-year EFL students to academic writing. It seeks to identify the components, characteristics, and the organisation of a basic paragraph, and then apply this knowledge to write different types of paragraphs.


      • Learning Objectives:

        By the end of the course, students will be able to:                                                                    

        • know what a paragraph is. 
        • identify the format of a paragraph.
        • understand the organization of a basic paragraph.
        • recognize the purpose of a topic sentence, supporting sentences, and concluding sentence. 
        • Write a unified and organised paragraph
        • apply the structure of a basic paragraph on the descriptive, narrative or argumentative paragraphs with regards to their respective purposes, content, as well as grammatical and lexical features.

      • Pre-Requisites

        Before starting the course, students should:          

        • have background knowledge about grammar and punctuation.

        • be able to write a simple sentence.

        • master some basic writing principles.

      Paragraph: Definition, Structure and Useful Examples of Paragraphs • 7ESL

        • The first word in a sentence is always capitalized.

      • Fragments Leçon

        Every sentence must have a subject and a verb and express a complete idea. A sentence that is missing a subject or a verb is incomplete. It is called a fragment.

        • I like Minneapolis. Is a clean city                               I like Minneapolis. It is a clean city                      (Subject is missing)

        Exercise 1 :

        Read the following paragraph and answer the question:

        1)-What is the controlling idea of this paragraph?

        2)-What kind of paragraph development is used?

        3)-What is the type of the conclusion?

                    Watching T.V for a long time has many serious effects on the child’s personality.

        One of these consequences is that the child becomes passive and does not try to do a sort of a creative work. He will in an imaginary world which is the one that is related to the characters depicted in cartoons and films. The child will waste time in watching T.V rather than doing other activities which may be more helpful. The fact of watching more T.V programs can  have a very bad impact on the child. This is why the parents should assume their responsibility by trying to make the child watch T.V just for a very few hours and help him to do other activities instead of sticking to watching T.V all the day.

        Exercise 2:

        One day, a little girl went to the zoo with her mother. There were many people who came with their children to see the animals.

        Write a paragraph using development by contrast to speak about the difference between a lazy and a diligent worker.
